‘The visit by a Garda detective today to the offices of Today FM radio station, demanding that staff from the Ray Darcy Show hand over information they might have had about the artist of these pieces was astounding,’ Labour party Senator Alan Kelly said.
‘Does this investigation really represent the best use of scarce Garda resources? And if as suggested, the Garda was to pursue a search warrant to be served on the station, would that really represent the best use of our judicial resources?
‘It is remarkable that a member of an Garda Siochana can turn up at a radio station within twenty four hours of an item being aired, but that when it came to investigating suspected wrongdoing at Anglo Irish Bank, it took the authorities weeks.’
‘I would ask precisely what crime has taken place in this instance. Did the Gardai go on a solo run in this matter, or was an official complaint made. If a complaint was made, who actually made it?’
‘Today’s action, combined with the pressure that was put on RTÉ … would suggest that there is a concerted effort on the part of Fianna Fail, to apply some muscle on the media.’
