Freelance Forum 2012: One week to go

What does the future hold for journalism?

The Freelance Forum asks that question later this month and hopes to provide some answers.

Aimed at freelance journalists, whether starting out or long-established, the Freelance Forum is a one-day event run yearly by the NUJ’s Dublin Freelance branch.

This year’s event looks as new developments with an online focus, with speakers on e-publishing and hyperlocal publishing. Also featured will be a segment on successful pitching, and a discussion on likely future trends in the industry.

Among the speakers are TheJournal.ie editor Susan Daly, Irish Times online editor Hugh Linehan, Evening Herald features editor Dee O’Keeffe, successful self-published author Catherine Ryan Howard, and Ronan Morris, director of WebTogether.

“Print is far from dead, as some are proclaiming, but it is evolving fast,” says organiser Gerard Cunningham. “Freelances will still pitch to ‘traditional’ media, whether print or broadcast, but they also need to develop new skills in dealing with new media. Freelance Forum aims to provide a heads-up on new trends and opportunities.”
